Photographers'Rights in the UK
Sadly photographers are running into problems trying to take photographs in places where just a few years ago it was commonplace and unrestricted. Sometimes this is because of changing security standards but often, we fear, it is just plain officiousness and "jobsworthing". To read a paper on Photographers'Rights in the UK produced recently by Linda MacPherson who is a lecturer in law at Herriot Watt University.
(It is written with a small font in order to get it on two sides of a sheet as a hand-out but remember you can increase the magnificication by typing Ctrl+). It is a pity she did not cover photographing children because that is becoming a vexed subject with some photographers being held in Police Stations while their homes and computers are being searched. It is my understanding that there is no "Law" against taking children's photographs only against "Inappropriate Photographs" - which is now left to a court to define. Nevertheless, you might be well advised to seek parents permission before including children in your pictures. The situation abroad is even more chaotic and I understand that in France and Belgium you need the permission of every person before taking a photograph. Imagine that on a crowded beach!

Three new PDFs courtesy of Adobe for you to read or download especially if you are into Raw Files.
1) An excellent work-through in using Adobe's Camera Raw converter v3 that is available with CS2 but most of the points are as valid with the earlier v2 in CS1 or Photoshop 7 that many of us are still using.

2) A fairly technical article by Bruce Fraser on the importance of accurate exposure using Raw and cautioning about the often quoted "advice" to
under expose in digital to avoid blown-out whites - you could be throwing away half the camera's potential and inviting noisy shadows too.

3) Have you considered saving your digital images as Digital Negatives (*.dng)? This file format from Adobe could ensure that your raw files do not become unreadable in the future and can also avoid new camera owners having to invest in the latest Photoshop just to be able to use their raw files.
